After three months, our Research Assistant Sophie Pathe has returned from
a research stay at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland in Espoo, Finland.
During her stay, she worked in the Design and Operation of Energy Systems team on modelling conventional and future steel production with the Backbone energy system model.

August 2022

From August 8th to 11th, the 14th International Conference on Applied Energy took place here at RUB in Bochum.
Organised by Prof. Span (board member of Applied Energy) from the Thermodynamics Chair of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the conference was hosted in Germany for the first time.
The conference focuses on topics in the field of renewable energies, clean conversion technologies, intelligent energy systems, energy policy and management, energy storage and many more.
Our chair was represented by Prof. Bertsch as chair of some sessions, and by the presentations of Sophie Pathe and Michel Gross.
Sophie's presentation deals with the transformation of the power system of the Rhenish Mining Area, including costs and environmental impacts, and is titled "Combining Life Cycle Assessment and Energy System Optimization to Model Sustainable Power Systems Transformation".
Michel's presentation deals with mine water heat utilisation of abandoned mines in the Ruhr Area and is titled "Mine water utilisation for climate-friendly heat supply in residential and commercial buildings with ultra-low temperature heating networks".

Brochure about the DS CCCE
The Doctoral School Closed Carbon Cycle Economy (DS CCCE) is an interdisciplinary doctoral school whose doctoral students investigate relevant issues against the background of structural change in the Rhenish lignite mining region in order to master the transition to closed carbon cycles in the long term. Among other things, technical, scientific, legal, economic, sociological and ethical aspects are addressed.
A new brochure provides insights into the diverse research topics and results to date.

Workshop
We held a workshop together with the group of Professor Francesco Contino from UC Louvain.
It´s been two great days with inspiring presentations and discussions on sustainable energy systems of tomorrow.
Looking forward to next year´s revival...

17th Symposium on Energy Innovation (EnInnov2022)
From 16.02. to 18.02.2022 the Conference EnInnov2022, hosted by the Institute for Electricity Economics and Energy Innovation of the TU Graz, took place.
Michel Gross and Christine Nowak participated with the topic „Decarbonisation of the heat supply of the building stock with low-temperature district heating“.
The results of the feasibility study „Low-temperature district heating for Gödenrothwere presented in a compact form and then discussed in detail.
