Feasibility study cold local heating for Gödenroth

In the feasibility study completed in September, the question of supplying three properties in the municipality of Gödenroth with cold local heat using geothermal energy is examined and evaluated from technical, economic and ecological points of view.Four energy supply variants are investigated. A reference scenario with pellet boilers in the three buildings studied, a scenario with heat grid + geothermal + decentralized heat pumps in the buildings + PV + battery storage, a scenario with partial heat grid + geothermal + decentralized heat pumps + air-to-water heat pump in the unconnected community hall + PV + battery storage and a final scenario in which a heat grid + geothermal + decentralized heat pumps in the buildings + PV + battery storage + renovation of the community hall are also considered. Internationale Konferenz für Operations Research, OR 2021
From 31.08. – 03.09.2021, the Operations Research Societies of Switzerland, Germany and Austria held their annual conference hosted by University of Bern.
Prof. Bertsch chaired a session on “Multi-criteria decision support for energy transitions”, in which Jonas Finke presented some recent
work on “Implementing the augmented epsilon-constraint method for multi-objective energy systems optimisation” and
Sophie Pathe discussed “Electricity system expansion planning of the Rhenish Mining Area considering environmental impacts by using multi-criteria-optimization”.
In another session, Leonie Plaga addressed “Possibilities to assess climate uncertainty in the planning of energy systems - a case study on hydro power in southwest Europe”.
We thank the organisers and are looking forward to OR 2022 in Karlsruhe!

Feasibility study for a cold local heating network
Feasibility study for a cold local heating network in the community of Gödenroth (Rhineland-Palatinate) in full swing.
A team from EE is investigating the technical and economic possibilities of supplying three properties with a cold local heating network.
Results are expected in the course of the summer.

Annual Meeting 2021 of the Research Network Energy System Analysis
From 18.05. - 20.05.2021 the annual meeting 2021 of the Research Network Energy System Analysis took place.
Our chair was represented with a poster presenting current and future work around the energy system modeling framework Backbone.

Heraeus seminar on "Thermal and Chemical Energy Storage: Scientific Challenges and Technological Relevance"

From 22.03 - 24.03.2021 the 743rd WE-Heraeus seminar will take place.
Prof. Bertsch participates in the seminar as invited speaker and gives a presentation "Demand for and profitability of energy storage - A market perspective".

"High Performance Computing"
We use our High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, with 24 cores
(48 threads)
, is used for model-based analysis of complex energy systems.
For example, the optimization model Backbone, which is based on the programming language GAMS and already used at the Chair EE, is used for this purpose.
Current research work will enable multi-objective optimization of energy systems in the future, for example, in order to be able to take ecological or social aspects into account in addition to costs.
Furthermore, the increased computational power is necessary to cope with the increased complexity of modern energy systems, which are characterized by high shares of renewable power generation and a coupling of several sectors or energy carriers, e.g. electricity, hydrogen and heat.
Students writing academic papers at EE will also have access to the HPC cluster.
Shorter computation times and more complex modeling thus make it possible to perform state-of-the-art simulations in final theses.

"Old but good - new energies in old infrastructures"
In the December issue of the magazine Schlaglichter der Wirtschaftspolitik, the article "Old, but good - new energies in old infrastructures" reported, among other things, on the Grubenwasser-Ruhr project of our chair.
In addition to GW-Ruhr, many other interesting projects for the reuse of existing energy infrastructure are presented.
