"High Performance Computing"

We use our High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, with 24 cores
(48 threads)
, is used for model-based analysis of complex energy systems.
For example, the optimization model Backbone, which is based on the programming language GAMS and already used at the Chair EE, is used for this purpose.
Current research work will enable multi-objective optimization of energy systems in the future, for example, in order to be able to take ecological or social aspects into account in addition to costs.
Furthermore, the increased computational power is necessary to cope with the increased complexity of modern energy systems, which are characterized by high shares of renewable power generation and a coupling of several sectors or energy carriers, e.g. electricity, hydrogen and heat.
Students writing academic papers at EE will also have access to the HPC cluster.
Shorter computation times and more complex modeling thus make it possible to perform state-of-the-art simulations in final theses.

"Old but good - new energies in old infrastructures"

In the December issue of the magazine Schlaglichter der Wirtschaftspolitik, the article "Old, but good - new energies in old infrastructures" reported, among other things, on the Grubenwasser-Ruhr project of our chair.

In addition to GW-Ruhr, many other interesting projects for the reuse of existing energy infrastructure are presented.
Click on the link to go to the online edition.
Among other things, the magazine is sent to parliamentarians.

We congratulate Tobias on his PhD Theses!

We from EE congratulate Tobias Reiners on the successful completion of his
PhD Theses on 04.11.2020 with the title:
"Design of cold heating networks for regenerative district supply using the example of the use of mine water heat in the residential quarter Wasserstadt Aden."

October 2020

On October 8 and 9, 2020, the Chair of Energy Systems and Energy Economics will host this year's workshop of the GOR working groups Decision Theory and Practice / OR in Environmental Protection / Project Management and Scheduling as an online workshop. The workshop originally planned for March 2020 had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will be held this year as a zoom conference. The joint workshop of the three GOR working groups serves the exchange of experience between economists, mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, natural scientists, users in non-university practice and all scientists with an active interest in decision theory and multi-criteria optimization and the use of operations research in the fields of environmental protection, energy economics, production economics, project management and scheduling. The conference program and the abstracts of the presentations can be found in the
Book of Abstracts.

The lowest possible costs and CO2 emissions of a hydrogen economy are made possible by a combination of transporting pure hydrogen, adding hydrogen to the natural gas grid and CO2 capture - this was investigated at EE as part of the EU project ELEGANCY. The German case study, in which an interdisciplinary team from the RUB considered not only technical but also sociological, legal and macroeconomic aspects, was part of a consortium of 22 partners in six countries. The study investigated how so-called "blue hydrogen", which can be produced almost climate-neutrally and also very cost-effectively from Norwegian natural gas by means of CO2 separation, can be used in the future in the countries under consideration, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Great Britain. At the end of the project, the science magazine RUBIN is now reporting on the project:

We congratulate Marc on his PhD Theses!

We from EE congratulate Marc Fiebrandt on the successful completion of his
PhD Theses on 23.07.2020 with the title:
"Techno-economic benchmark of liquid air energy storage and lithium-ion batteries in combination with photovoltaics in selected industrialized countries."

March 2020

Dear students,

due to a new regulation of the Ruhr-University Bochum all events from 16.03.2020 on will be cancelled.

Since we do not know when the exam will be taken, we would like to ask you to refrain from asking questions. As soon as there are any news, you will be informed by us.

Further information on how the RUB deals with Corona can be found here:

VDI Prize of the Bochum District Association

On Friday, 14 February 2020, Sabrina Grüber (photo) was honoured for her outstanding master's thesis by the VDI district association in Bochum. The award ceremony took place during the annual meeting of the Bochum district association by the 1st chairman Prof. Dr.-Ing. The thesis was carried out in cooperation with the International Geothermal Centre Bochum (today Frauenhofer IEG). The title of her work is „Energetic conception of a heat network with bidirectionally connectable thermal consumer/producer systems under integration of solar thermal energy and seasonal heat storage in mines.“
Mrs. Grüber was accompanied by EE supervisor Michel Gross (photo).

EE congratulates Mrs Grüber on this award.

January 2020

Within the EU project ELEGANCY, in which 22 partners from 6 countries are researching on concepts for future energy systems with hydrogen and CCS, a hearing takes place in the EU Parliament on 29.01.2020 between 12:30 and 14:30. The EU politicians will be informed about first results and recommendations for further actions.

EE is participating in the research project together with four other chairs at RUB and focuses on techno-economic analyses for the German case study.
